Kibbeh, Kafta, Fatoush, Baba Ganoush – if you’re yearning for a Middle East feast, you’re probably yearning for a Lebanese – the most popular of Middle Eastern Cuisines.
Lebanese cooking is big on fresh fish, tasty meats, seafood, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lots of garlic and olive oil. Some Lebanese dishes can be traced back as far as the Romans. Many dishes were introduced by the Turks or the French when they ruled the roost. All those dishes are now excitedly devoured by a great many of us Brits, via the (very modern) Just Eat app.
Shawarma is a real fave over here. Not just because it’s great fun to say out loud but because it’s a near-unbeatable bread-wrapped meat fest. Lebanese food also has the perfect solution to anyone protesting for pizza – Manakish bread aka ‘The Lebanese pizza’.

Fattoush
Fattoush is a Lebanese Bread Salad made from toasted or fried pieces of Khubz (aka flatbread) combined with mixed greens and other veggies, like radishes and tomatoes. This is one of a family of dishes known as Fatteh, which uses flatbread as a base. Like the authentic Lebanese Chicken Fatteh, an amazing combo of yoghurt, spiced shredded chicken, chickpeas, toasted pine nuts and (of course) pita bread. Manakish bread (aka ‘The Lebanese Pizza’) is the number one snack food around the Lebanon. A bit softer and chewier that Italian pizza toppings consist of thyme, cheese or ground meat. It can be sliced or folded and so makes a quick and easy nibble for weekend parties or gatherings (and even quicker and easier through your Just Eat app).
Shawarma
Shawarma (recently mentioned in a certain blockbuster movie) is a Levant dish from the Eastern Med based on the doner kebab of Ottoman Turkey. Originally lamb or mutton, today's shawarma can be chicken, turkey, beef, or veal, cut into thin slices and stacked in a cone-like shape on a vertical rotisserie. Fresh fish and seafood are also must-try cuisines. Sayadieh, for example, is a classic family dish prepared with saffron rice and firm, white fish then garnished with fried onions, sumac, almonds, pine nuts, mint and creamy Tahina Sauce – which is the second most important part of the dish. (The most important part, of course, is ordering it through the Just Eat app.)
